This is a blog about a blog. Or, maybe a blog about building a blog. While you’re reading this, I’m busy building not only this blog, but also a totally separate blog about a totally separate subject.
Somewhere along the way, I had the idea it that it might be a fun project to start a blog – this blog – where I could document what I’m learning, trying, screwing up, and rocking as I build that totally separate blog on that totally separate subject. As time went on, I figured out that building a blog is exactly the same as building any other business, and that it’s so accessible and understandable that just about anyone can read a set of instructions, follow them, and end up with a high quality product that functions like a business should – providing value and generating revenue.
While I did come to this project with some background in the cyber, I was definitely not a blog superstar. As a non-blog-superstar, I did what any non-blog-superstar would do when they needed to know things – I turned to the google.
And you know what I learned?
There are a lot of blogs about marketing. There are a lot of blogs about search engine optimizing. And advertising. And PHP coding. And blogs dedicated to crazy advanced topics or super fine nitty gritty details. But it’s really hard to find quality information about the whole process of starting, building, and growing a blog.
I figured, hey, I can do that. So I did. Or, am. Am doing that. Because the journey never stops.
Some Background on Your Guide Along this Journey
I have a STEM degree from a fancy college in Boston (magna cum laude, suckahs), a professional degree from a completely different fancy college (for real, it’s in a frame and everything) and have started, run, and sold a few businesses over the past fifteen years. I helped start a pretty cool magazine once, contributed to a few others, and even got paid actual money for a while writing for The New York Times Company. Of course, I had a copy editor then, so cut me a little slack as you read this blog.
I honestly don’t think any of that is very important to what we’ll be doing together here. I mean, I guess it suggests I’m not dumb, but you’re not dumb either, so we’re starting from the same place. Still, the word on the street – among blogging type people – is that readers like to know this kind of stuff. So there it is. Enjoy.
What We’re About
I’m committed to the idea of showing you everything I’m doing, step-by-step, with no hand waving, obfuscating, or intentional vagueness. I want you to know what I know, and I’m going to tell you when I don’t know something – then I’ll go figure it out and get back to you. My goal is to have a non-cyber person read through this blog and be able to sit down, start their own blogging business, and generate some revenue – so they can buy health insurance or cut back at a job they hate, or hang out with their kid a little more.
If you’re new to these parts, I’d suggest starting with The Core. The Core has all of our original articles, in order, and covers the essential things you’ll need to get a blog up and running – the right way.
There’s also a useful set of quick-read articles over in a section I call “Smarter in 60 Seconds” if you’re looking for fast tips. I like this section, so it’s going to grow and grow over time. Each article there is linked to deeper levels of discussion, which lets you read at your own pace, according to your own interests.
So that’s it. We’re going to build a blog together – a business – from the very beginning all the way through to crazy complicated stuff. I’m pretty excited to get going. If you have the integrity to do things the right way and the dedication to put in the work that’s required, I’m sure we can help you build something great.
Welcome, I’m really glad you’re here!
